WBLQ's history begins back in the mid 80s when (then 99.3) the station signed on the air. Fast forward to the early 1990s and the station was a popular southern Rhode Island music station. Around that time Chris DiPaola took a job at WBLQ as a disc jockey until the time of that station being sold off to the owners of AM 1230 WERI and became WERI FM.
In 1997 Chris signed on the air with his own station on 88.1 FM. Feeling nostalgic, Chris gave the new station the call letters WBLQ. Initially a rock station, Chris changed the format to better serve the community filling a void left when the owners of WERI sold their two stations off. Ten years later and after bouncing around the dial a little bit, Chris eventually became the owner of what was once AM 1230 WERI himself and moved the WBLQ community programing back to AM 1230 but opting to keep the WBLQ call letters.
